"Without You" is a song written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of British rock group Badfinger, and start released on their 1970 album No Dice. The power ballad[i] has been recorded by over 180 artists,[2] and versions released as singles past Harry Nilsson (1971), T. Yard. Sheppard (1983) and Mariah Carey (1994) became international best-sellers. The Nilsson version was included in 2021's Rolling Stone 's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.[three] Paul McCartney once described the ballad as "the killer song of all fourth dimension".[4]

In 1972, writers Ham and Evans received the British Academy's Ivor Novello Award for All-time Song Musically and Lyrically.[5]

Badfinger original [edit]

First recorded past the rock group Badfinger, the song was equanimous by two of its members. Pete Ham wrote a vocal originally titled "If It'due south Dearest", but it had lacked a stiff chorus. At the time of writing, the ring shared residence with the Mojos at 7 Park Avenue in Golders Green. One evening, in the midst of the parties, songwriting, touring, in Golders Green, Ham and his girlfriend Beverly Tucker were about to exit for the evening. Merely just equally they were leaving Tom Evans said he had an idea for a vocal – Ham said, "Non tonight, I've promised Bev." But she thought he would exist wondering if he had done the right affair later, if he went out. She told him, "Go into the studio, I'm fine about it..." He replied, "Your oral fissure is grin, simply your optics are deplorable." The song Ham wrote that nighttime was called "If it'south Love" and has the poetry "Well I can't forget tomorrow, when I recollect of all my sorrow, I had you lot there but and so I let you go, and now it's only fair that I should let you know... if information technology's beloved". Only Ham wasn't happy with the chorus.[half-dozen] [ failed verification ]

Evans' relationship with his future married woman Marianne influenced his lyrics:

One evening he [Evans] went to her [Marianne'south] friend Karen and told Karen, "She's left me. I need her dorsum. I tin can't live without her." He flew to Bonn to observe her – he wrote a song called "I Can't Live". Its chorus included "I can't live, if living is without you, I can't alive, I can't give any more." And so the merging of the two songs,[7] [ failed verification ] Ham and Evans created the hit [with] Ham's poesy, "warm, sweetness, sentimental" and Evans' chorus, "intense, dramatic, heartbreaking."[8]

Both Ham and Evans said they did non consider the vocal to have much potential at the time Badfinger recorded it, and the rails was slotted to close the offset side of their 1970 anthology No Dice. Badfinger's recording of the song, which is more than brusque than its successors' versions, was not released as a single in Europe or Northward America.

The two writers of the song, Ham and Evans, later committed suicide due to legal and financial issues. In Evans' case, information technology was a dispute over songwriting royalties for "Without You" that precipitated his action. Songwriting royalties had get the field of study of constant legal wrangling for Evans, and in 1983, post-obit an acrimonious argument with his bandmate Joey Molland over the royalties for the song, Evans hanged himself.[9] [x]

Background [edit]

Harry Nilsson (pictured in 1972) covered Badfinger'due south vocal "Without You".

Harry Nilsson, at the fourth dimension best known for his hit "Everybody's Talkin'" and for composing "One", recorded by Three Dog Night, heard Badfinger'southward recording of "Without You" at a political party,[12] and mistook information technology for a Beatles song.[13] Afterward realising it was not, he decided to cover the song for his 1971 album Nilsson Schmilsson. The single was released by RCA in the fall of 1971, and kickoff charted on radio stations across the United states in early on December. "Without You" debuted at number 99 on the Billboard Hot 100 on xviii December 1971, and on its tenth week, in the chart dated 19 February 1972, started its four-week run at number one. Billboard ranked it equally the number 4 single of 1972.[xiv] The tape topped Billboard 'due south Easy Listening chart for 5 weeks.

The record spent v weeks at number one on the U.k. Singles Nautical chart, beginning on xi March, somewhen selling near 800,000 copies.[15] It went to number i in several other countries, including Australia (for five weeks), Republic of ireland (two weeks) and New Zealand (two weeks).

The single, Grammy-nominated for Record of the Twelvemonth, was produced by Richard Perry, who later on explained, "It was a different record for its fourth dimension. It was a big ballad with a heavy backbeat, and although many artists accept cut songs like it since, no one was doing it then."[16] Gary Wright, who worked with Badfinger on George Harrison'due south projects, played the piano. Also featured are Klaus Voormann (bass), Jim Keltner (drums) and John Uribe (audio-visual guitar). The string and horn arrangements are by Paul Buckmaster. In 1973, the single won Nilsson the Grammy award for All-time Popular Vocal Operation, Male.[17] While Nilsson rarely gave live concerts, he did perform the song with Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band at Caesar'southward Palace in Las Vegas in September 1992.[18]

In 2021, this version was ranked 496th on Rolling Stone 's 500 Greatest Songs of All Fourth dimension.[nineteen]

Groundwork [edit]

American vocalist and songwriter Mariah Carey'south version, based on Harry Nilsson's version rather than the Badfinger original, was released equally the third single off Music Box in the kickoff quarter of 1994, its Us release engagement of 24 January 1994 [38] falling but over a week after Nilsson had died following a center attack on 15 January 1994. In the US "Without Y'all" was promoted as a double A-side with "Never Forget You lot". While she had heard Nilsson's version every bit a very immature girl, Carey's decision to remake his hit was based on a hazard hearing during the time she was recording Music Box: "I heard that song in a eating place and just knew it would be a huge international hit" recalls Carey.[39] Carey's version has been considered very popular on talent shows.[40] "Without You" was afterward included on some non-US pressings of her compilation albums #1'south (1998) and #1 to Infinity (2015), and her 2001 compilation, Greatest Hits. "Without You" was also included on her 2008 compilation The Ballads.

In February 2008, Carey's version was performed in severely broken English language on the Bulgarian talent show Music Idol by contestant Valentina Hasan, spawning a global meme called "Ken Lee" (misinterpretation of the line "Tin't live").[41]

Chart functioning [edit]

"Without You" reached number three on the U.s. Billboard Hot 100 for vi weeks, remaining in the top 40 for 21 weeks and on the chart for 23. It reached number ii on both the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay and Radio & Records pop charts (catastrophe Carey'due south streak of consecutive number ones on the latter nautical chart; all ten of her previous singles had gone to the top), and number three on the Hot 100 Singles Sales. It was certified gilded by the RIAA and sold 600,000 copies domestically.[42] [43] Information technology was ranked 16 on the Hot 100 1994 year-end charts. In Canada, it peaked at number four.

"Without You" remains Carey'southward biggest hit across Europe. In the British Isles, where Carey had yet to score a number one hit, "Without You" made its UK chart debut at number one where it remained for four weeks in total, and later ended every bit the 7th acknowledged single of 1994 in the Uk.[44] Additionally, Carey achieved a "Chart Double" in the U.k., with both "Without Yous" and the anthology Music Box property the acme spot at the same time.[45] In the UK, "Without You" was Carey's merely number-one solo hit although she has since topped the charts with her collaboration with Westlife: "Against All Odds" in 2000, until Carey scored a second number-one solo striking with "All I Want for Christmas Is You" in 2020. "Without You" was certified platinum in the Great britain with combined sales and streams of 600,000. It was a runaway success beyond Europe, in which it topped the European Hot 100 Singles chart for two weeks. "Without You" reached number i for 10 weeks in Switzerland; eight weeks in Austria and Sweden; 7 weeks in Kingdom of belgium; 5 weeks in Ireland and the Netherlands; 4 weeks in Deutschland and Iceland; and two weeks in Scotland, where Carey'due south success had previously been limited. The song also peaked at number ii in France and Denmark; at number 3 in Norway; and at number four in Republic of lithuania. "Without Y'all" was certified platinum in Frg and Austria by IFPI, and gold in France by SNEP.

Existence a number-three striking for Carey in Australia, "Without Y'all" topped the charts in New Zealand for one week. Information technology was certified 2× platinum in Australia by ARIA, and gold in New Zealand past RIANZ.

Critical reception [edit]

Scottish newspaper Aberdeen Press and Journal described the song as "inspirational".[46] Larry Flick from Billboard wrote, "Carey offers a true-blue rendition of the eternally sweet pop carol". He added, "Song's organisation is infused with all the romance and drama it requires, with Carey rising above the mix with a vocal that is more heartfelt and gutsy than note-scaling and acrobatic."[47] Troy J. Augusto from Cash Box stated that "Carey has thankfully learned the important difference between dynamic control and sonic overkill, never more evident than here. Her contempo short concert tour revealed Mariah to exist an anxious, under-confident alive performer, but this song, with its accompanying tale of her own childhood loneliness fabricated "Without You" the show's climax. Await a long nautical chart life."[48] David Browne of Amusement Weekly chosen Carey's cover a "by-the-numbers remake of Nilsson'southward melodramatic 1972 hitting."[49] John Kilgo from The Network Forty wrote that "exhibiting her dynamic vocal range with powerful emotion, Mariah scores again with her rendition of Harry Nilsson'due south chart topper."[50] A reviewer from People Magazine noted that "she takes on a sensuality—in a lower annals—that is often sacrificed for her "expect Ma, no easily" song fireworks."[51] Pop Rescue stated that "Without You" gives the vocalizer "a ton of space to really allow her vocals reach wherever they desire to", adding it as "an epic runway, and a fantastic showcase of her vocals."[52] Stephen Holden of Rolling Stone called information technology the "likeliest contender" for ballads like "I Volition Always Honey You", praising how Carey "dips into her lower register and is accompanied by fill-in singers (including herself) magnified to sound like a mighty gospel chorus."[53]

ASCAP and Ivor Novello recognition [edit]

On fifteen May 1995, at ASCAP'southward twelfth annual Pop Music Awards in Beverly Hills, California, "Without You" was recognised as i of the 50 nearly-played songs of 1994 (due largely to Mariah Carey's recording). Discrepancies in ASCAP's books, resulting from a lawsuit against the Ham and Evans estates by their former manager, incorrectly attributed the song every bit being composed not only by Ham and Evans, just besides by Badfinger's other bandmembers, Mike Gibbins and Joey Molland, and their former director, Bill Collins. This designation and a lack of correction by ASCAP prompted the Ham Estate to boycott the ceremony. The song was also nominated for "Vocal of the Year" in London at the Ivor Novello Awards.[121]
